When is Makar Sankranti 2024? Know the date & timing

Makar Sankranti, regarded as one of the oldest Hindu festival, is observed with tremendous pomp throughout India. Sankranti, which is celebrated in various ways around the nation, marks the sun's astrological arrival into the sign of Makara (Capricorn). The days are getting longer and warmer with this celestial change. The Hindu calendar also denotes the start of spring and the conclusion of the harvest celebration. The celebration is known for its spectacular feasts, bonfires, colourful decorations, fairs, and kite flying.

Makar Sankranti is observed according to the solar cycle, whereas most Hindu festival are observed according to the lunar calendar. This day, which is dedicated to Lord Surya, heralds the arrival of summer and the start of the auspicious Uttarayan period. The association with Uttaraayan goes back to the time of the Mahabharata legend when Bhishma Pitamah waited for the sun to set in Uttaraayan while lying down on a bed of arrows.

This time of year marks the beginning of the Rabi crop and agricultural cycle in the majority of India, when the hard work in the fields is almost finished and crops have been sown. In addition to being beneficial for the crops, the extended period of sunlight serves as a haven for those who have been dreading winter. All around the nation, people celebrate the harvest festival with great enthusiasm and joy. The harvest celebration known as Lohri in Punjab is named Bhogali Bihu in Assam, and Pongal in the southern states.

For Makar Sankranti, sesame seeds (til) are utilised in nearly every cuisine. Sesame seeds are said to aid in soul cleansing and spiritual enlightenment in Hindu mythology.

Makar Sankranti morning is marked by the sight of vibrant kites floating over the sky. Flying kites and competing with other people is considered one of the main celebrations in Gujarat. Each year, the International Kite Festival (Uttarayan) draws thousands of participants from all over the nation and the world. Months in advance, preparations are made for this event.
